Chinese landscape painting had fully matured by the Northern Song Dynasty, with great masters emerging during this era. Their works convey the elegance and cultivation characterizing the recondite erudition and cultural sophistication of literati culture.
Manifesting the ideals of 'to traverse, to view, to journey and to reside' within the representations of nature, these works undoubtedly represent an insurmountable apex in Chinese art and have had a long-lasting influence ever since. This event will explore the legacy of the Northern Song landscape painting from the viewpoints of both art historian and artist.

Dialogue with Artist Li Huayi
The section 'Dialogue with Artist Li Huayi' will focus on how Northern Song landscape painting has influenced Li Huayi's work. Together with our moderators Dorothy Lin (Gallery Director, Business Development) and Elaine Wang (Gallery Associate Director, Business Development), Li Huayi will explore how literati ideals are reflected through painting, as well as discuss the value of traditional ink in contemporary times, with reference to his artistic innovation of incorporating gold as a medium into ink painting.
About Li Huayi
Born in Shanghai in 1948 and settling in San Francisco in 1982, Li Huayi's practice revitalises Chinese landscape painting traditions from the Song Dynasty through the lens of contemporary Western methods. In 2008, Li began in a new direction, executing ink paintings on antique Japanese gilded screens instead of paper. In 2019, he presented his latest series of works comprising ink and gold leaf on silk, showcasing whimsical and unrestrained pictorial expressions of poetic, immersive dreamscapes that project light and boundless space.
