Zao Wou-Ki: A Lasting Legacy: Singapore

In conjunction with the exhibition From Landscape to Landscapes in Singapore, Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery organized a talk on one of the greatest Chinese painters of the 20th century – Zao Wou-Ki. What constitutes his international success? How have his works occupied a solid position on the market? What factors are at work behind his lasting legacy?

 

Having studied Zao Wou-Ki for over 20 years and published a substantial monograph of the artist with 4 years of research, Ms. Catherine Kwai, the founder of the gallery, will examine the artist’s career from a variety of angles covering:

 

• His artistic breakthrough fusing Eastern and Western aesthetics

• The evolution of his styles and their significance

• His position in both art history and the art market in comparison to his contemporaries

• The preservation of his legacy – foundation, archive and exhibitions

 

Zao Wou-Ki is a name that resonates with many in the global art world; his legacy lives on a decade after his passing. This talk addresses his significant influence and inspiration for the future generations.

Catherine Kwai is the founder of Kwai Fung Hin, a leading art gallery in Hong Kong specializing in 20th century modern art and Asian contemporary art, with a commitment to fostering dialogue between cultural heritage and contemporary expressions with a global perspective.

Championing cultural continuity, Catherine takes her vision beyond the gallery. Besides supporting art development through her own foundation, she also advocates for education, having served as Member of the Court of City University of Hong Kong as well as The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Her contributions in art and culture have earned her the awards "Knight of the National Order of Merit" by the French Government in 2011 and "Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy" by the Italian Government in 2021.
