Blossoms - Solo Exhibition of Jin Yucheng: Kwai Fung Salone

5 Jul - 17 Aug 2024

Kwai Fung Salone is delighted to present Blossoms, a solo exhibition of the esteemed Chinese writer and artist Jin Yucheng. Organized by Kwai Fung Salone and co-organized by Yunmiao Culture.

Featuring a captivating collection of 41 paintings from various series spanning the past decade, this exhibition marks Jin’s debut in Hong Kong following successful showcases in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen under the same title. Viewers are invited to explore Jin’s intricate visual universe and surreal landscape, which together offer a mesmerizing tapestry of imagery beyond his acclaimed literary works.

Born in 1952, Jin Yucheng was an “educated youth”, he had been a fitter, before working as a literary editor, and by now he has earned prominence for his novels. His career as a painter began in 2012 when he created 20 illustrations for his renowned novel Blossoms. Jin received general recognition for his illustrations, prompting him to further pursue painting. The novel Blossoms vividly portrays Shanghai during the 1960s and 1990s, often likened to the “Ukiyo-e” of that era in Shanghai and China, and has received multiple literary awards. Currently, a television series adaptation of the novel, directed by Wong Kar-wai, is airing in Hong Kong.

Jin considers painting “a realm beyond words”. His paintings reflect an obsession with the “interactions between narratives and scenes”, weaving visuals and stories into intricate layers of drama. Through exploration of historical memories, observations of reality and imaginative visions of the future, he creates surrealistic theatres.
